About

Links between San Francisco Libre and Reading started in 1986 and the two towns were formally twinned in 1994. This was to show solidarity with the people of San Francisco Libre and develop a long term relationship between the two towns and their communities. One face of the twinning is to promote educational and cultural links so that we can have better understanding of the life in each other’s countries.

Since 1994, exchange visits between the twin towns have involved teenagers, teachers, students, development workers and the Mayors of Reading and San Francisco Libre. The elected Mayor of San Francisco Libre for 2011 visited Reading in 2003 for the 750 anniversary of Reading’s Charter. David Geary, who sadly passed in September 2012 made more than one visit. Communication has been greatly improved since 2011 as a result of San Francisco Libre’s increasing access to the internet.
